The only reason that Gandalf wasn't in Harry Potter is that he wouldn't let any of the students pass, therefore he was replaced.

Gandalf would curbstomp Dumbledore, nothing against the Harry Potter universe, but the Lord of the Rings universe is on a completely different power scale. If you go by the movies you might have an argument, but by the literature, there's no contest.
