if your runnin a 64bit def. get a 6bg ram @ 1600 w/ that i7 920..what thelis said about the 1333, they are gettin outdated and you said you want this future proof. also that EVGA mobo is the way to go, comes w/ lifetime warranty and it OC's ur CPU for you to 3.3gh[dats that clock of the i7 975 extremez] w/out you doin anything at all[since u dont want to OC it then let the mobo do it itself], all you have to do is enable 'dummy OC' and saves it.

i will take those suggestions in mind.

Ill start with a 1TB hd and upgrade later on to a SSD when the prices go down a bit and have the 1tb HD as secondary

imo, i doubt a SSD is really necessary because it only really shows its power well during bench marking..

Not sure what you are talking about with the RAM. 1600MHz is the speed to have right now. It scales well with raised FSBs of the i7. When you have more money, simply add a few more sticks of ram. It is a bad idea to save money by downsizing on speed. 1333MHz ram is quickly becoming dated.

1333 is becoming dates, WTH are you talking about. We've yet to see DDR3 making a noticeable difference to performance at all over DDR2 yet.
i7 doesn't need the bandwidth. Even 1333 offers no real increase in performance over 1066.

The EVGA mobo is much better for overclocking. Most enthusiasts stick faithfully to EVGA motherboards. They have a great reputation, their RMA service is wonderful and they make high quality products.

Sure, the guy who puts a 965 under liquid nitrogen and goes for a world record can justify spending that much on a motherboard, but the OP is an average user, he has no need of that.

I feel as if we have had this discussion about RAM already. If you do not recall, it came down to personal preference. When I am recommending parts to a person, I do so out of my own personal preference. This is why we are on a forum- you say your bit and I'll say my bit. He will take both sides into consideration and make a decision.

I've overclocked on both the ASUS mobo and the EVGA mobo. The EVGA that I worked with, one that I eventually bought for myself, was astonishing.

The motherboard that I offered is only 20 dollars more than the one he chose. I thought that he would rather a better motherboard for close to the same price, but if 20 dollars make that much of a difference- I stand corrected.

Then a "lower end" X58 would be perfectly fine for you.

I'd also recommend switching to the HD 4890, it's the same speed as the GTX 280, only $60 cheaper. OCs like crazy too.

As for the memory, go with 3x2GB DDR3 1333, the price difference between 1066 and 1333 is hardly anything.

So I'm deciding to go on a build my own path, that way I can get EXACTLY what I would like. although ibuypower.com has a nice array of items to choose from. actually most of the things I am getting are available on the site. EXCEPT for the corsair type RAM i want to get for my rigg. I think thats whats actually stopping me from buying from them and just buying the parts and building it on my own.

I would change out the motherboard and the ram for what worship me suggested in the post above. I doubt a person like you will even notice the difference, and the difference is negligible to the average user. The differences are in a more enthusiasts point of view.

Also, I would change the 285 to 1GB version. You may get a bit higher framerates but for a much higher cost. Its up to you; it's your money. If you think its worth it than go for it.

Anyway, what worshipme said seems to apply to you more, I doubt you are a hardcore overclocker or anything.
