Thermal Compound

Just wondering for future purchase of a new comp, how do u propperly apply thermal compound to the processor? ive heard u spread it across the whole thing, just a thin line across the whole processor, just a dot in the middle, only and only on the middle bumo nd no were else or it will destroy it.

Ive heard tones of diff ways. So which one is correct/ best way or is there a correct way?
