I'm not that computer-savvy, so I really need help in upgrading my computer.

I'm using:

Windows Vista Home Premium
3070MB RAM
DirectX10
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 1523 MB
1440 X 900 (32 bit) (60 Hz) Monitor
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+

I'm thinking of getting a new processor and video card. Not sure which

I want to improve my computer to allow me to run games on max setting. I'm trying to keep my budget around $300, but if it's a bit more, I don't mind.

Anyone have some suggestions, please?

EDIT: Took out the intel processor. Learn something new every day. :)

Know that you are limited by your motherboard when upgrading your processor. I'm guessing you're using an AM2/AM2+ so without changing the motherboard you can only use processors of that type to upgrade with.

Yeah. If you can find out the make and model of your motherboard, that will help us help you make a decision. One of those processors is socket AM2+, and one is AM3. That all makes a difference.

I am sure your MOBO is AM2/AM2+. That Phenom II X3 is an AM3.

If your MOBO allows AM2+ you could get a Phenom II X4 940 if your MOBO allows 125watt CPU's?

As for graphics card, the GTS is a decent card, just make sure you have a 500+watt PSU!!!

I used the CPU-Z program to find out the motherboard. What came up was:

Manufacturer: ASUSTek Computer INC.
Model: NARRA3 3.02
Rev.: A3
LPCIO: Fintek F8000

I have no idea what this means...

Does this help with anything?
