why not grab the 2TB from WesternDigital? The unfortunate likelihood is that you'll get one of the affected 7200.11's with firmware SD1A

True, but IMO that isn't worth $40 to get 1TB less space just to have 1 bay used not 2. If you need to, there are USB bays, and add-on bays for a few cases.
