Don't get me wrong OCZ is right up there along with Corsair and Kingston for better brand names. But also look over the individual models by each tool since they can get hefty pricewise real fast!

For Kingston the Data Traveller is reasonable for both with that brand. I would advise definitely steering away from PNY going with SanDisk at least if you don't find exactly what you need. Lately I said since I could no longer find the Kingstons I went with a 32gb SanDisk running $70- at Staples!

I Use a Sony MicroVault 4Gb at the moment. It seems to do just fine. Do the computers support FireWire? Because there are also FireWire thumb drives.

Most do! But you would need to ask Teny there if he has that option available.

Nah, none of my computers nor my campus's computer have firewire.

how well does the Sony MicroVault 4Gb in terms of performance of read/write? remember, I plan on doing work straight off my USB flash. So I would need one that can read off fast, and save my work fast, or at least faster than my PNY Attache.

I think one place to look would likely be at the Consumer Reports web site or another place that regularly makes product comparisons in order to see a larger number of brands placed against each other. You can buy a PCI eSATA or FireWire card. Trust me, those are just the best things for that. I can't say, I have yet to read any specification for my MicroVault. I know it did a 650Mb file in just under 20 seconds off a USB 1.1 port the other day.

The comparisons one author made there placed the Sony MicroVaults at the bottom of the list with PNY. OCZ stood ranked close if not the highest in each comparison seen so far.

I certainly won't be getting another PNY while OCZ, Patriot, Kingston, SanDisk making out far better then others would be considered for any new ones. Make sure to look over the various models once you decide on which brand to go with as well.

I vote firewire.
It tends to have the highest read/write rates and it is definitely much more useful, since you can system link with it if you have any macs.

Kind of pointless having a firewire when I will be working on my laptop and campus.
The only time I do work on my desktop is when I am at home, and don't feel like using my laptop.

I'm voting for either the OCZ Rally or the Patriot Xporter. But for you, you'd probably want the former.
