I decided to get a rifle.

Well just thinking about it, I decided I'm going to be getting a rifle once I have some money saved up. I don't know how many of you have rifles, (auto or semi-auto), but if you can tell me what some of your experiences have been and what you like the best, I would be appreciative.

I have a rifle, just because I like shooting. I still suck though.

My first and only gun as of now is a Savage Arms .17 HMR.

sorry to burst your bubble there, but civilians cant own an automatic rifle. semi though - go for it!

Depending on where you live, there are permits you can get for fully-automatic weapons. Not cheap and takes a long time to get.

I want a rifle for self defense, target practice, and deer/ elk hunting. I'm still deciding on a caliber though and what to get. Any good brands you guys like? Favorite Caliber?

Another popular rifle in my area because the gun along with the ammo is so cheap is the .22 This would be a good rifle to just shoot for target practice and is good for smaller game animals. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_Long_Rifle

What really helps is to have close friends who have a collection of guns and ammo and who will trust you enough to test them. It really depends on personal preference after you have narrowed it down to what you wish to do with the rifle itself.

I have a 243 Winchester. Depending on the grain of the bullet, it's good for varmint, deer, black bear, and antelope. It's old, but a very trustworthy piece.
