Just out of curiosity, was it VGA or DVI?

DVI did it, but VGA didn't have the artifacts.

Now that's odd, but not surprising.

Even then, I'd be surprised if it was a VGA cable. I have a 50 foot VGA cable that I use to run to projectors if I need to give a presentation, and it's surprisingly clear. I know VGA is very tolerant of long distances compared to DVI cables. You could never run a 50 foot DVI cable without some additional equipment.

Did you reboot after lowering the clocks? Sometimes they don't take affect until after a reboot.
