they may be smart, but that doesn't mean they are good musicians.

Well, that's your opinion. Just because you don't like their style, doesn't mean they're bad musicians. I listen to Tom Waits and Bob Dylan (90's, 00's). Both of which have very unique voices. I know I cringed when I heard Bob's records from the 90's, especially after listening to his earlier material. Same with Waits.

Everyone has different tastes.

It comes down to tastes. As for my take? Annoying.

As far as the repetition is concerned, some songs I find it annoying in, others, not too bad. For example:

That main guitar you hear at the start goes through pretty much the whole song, but there's enough things besides that going on that it doesn't bother me.
