ventrilo problems

Ok, I have been trying to make this work all day. I downloaded both the Ventrilo Client and Server. I edited the .INI file to change the speech to speex (my friend uses mac). So I start up the server with the name 'Server 1' and when my friends try to connect it says for them 'contacting server' and never connects. I have them using my IP address for the hostname too. OH, and I am using a linksys router hooked up to a cable modem.

do I port forward Ventrilo or Ventrilo Server?

i got it forwarded and still doesnt work...my friends still cant get into it...
