i have a intel e8500 with the stock cooler and it runs at high temps.
at idle it is around 40C and when i play counter strike it gets at about 70C.
why is this and what can i do

Take the cooler off and see if it's making good contact with the CPU. Wipe the old thermal paste off, put a drop of new paste on, and remount the heatsink, making sure the pins are in correctly.

is it very dusty?
becouse the stock cooler should be enough as long as your not over clocked...

nooooooooooooooooo
do that as last resort and if you have to spend the money on a decent cooler
so anoyying to do
if its very dusty just clean it with compressed air
also what are you using to monitor temps
also is this a custom built computer?

I have the same chip and bought this fan. It keeps mine very cool. You also need this retention bracket to help hold it and should get a good thermal paste like this one.

Why does everyone think that the stock cooler is so hard to remove? I never had a problem removing both of mine on two different motherboards.

its not removing it... its trying to put it back on
such night mares

Something I definitely agree with. Just the idea of pushpins keeping my CPU from roasting itself bugs me.
