Well, If it was a disconnected hdd it would still post. It does sound like a hardware issue though. RAM is usually a likely culprit. If you have more then one stick try them separately. You can also try removing your pci cards.
 
Disregard my last post, didn't notice you were on a laptop. Can you plug in an external monitor/tv and see what happens?
 
Just turn off the laptop completely, take out the battery, and unplug it from all power (so it's absolutely dead). Then, hold the power button for 30 seconds (important!! Keep the full 30 seconds!). Then plug back into power cord and try the power button again

Sounds stupid I know... give it a shot though! Worked for me
 
What did you do to test the RAM? Just re-seat it or did you try a different stick?

With an HP unit, that what you are describing usually ends up being the motherboard.
