Would this work? GPU/MOBO

Re: Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 Question

I said 1500W to be safe but if he is just running 3 4870's and not 3 4870x2's then I believe that he can run these cards safely with a 1200W psu.

a 1000w psu is "safe" enough, a reference design 4870 by itself uses ~170w at full load, 3x170w is 510w, adding another 1000w on top of that for the cpu, memory, and fans is ridiculous...

Re: Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 Question

Fine then go with a 1000W psu. I was just saying 1500W for 3 4870x2's but since he isn't getting those 1000W will be plenty.

Re: Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 Question

would i be able to use the 3 pci-e slots?

you can, the first two will run at x16 and the third would run at x8, for the best performance/bang for your buck you might want to consider just two video cards to run in the two x16 slots...

Re: Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 Question

Yeah x8 just isn't quite up to par. They may make a board that has 3 x16 pci-e slots but idk. Wolvarine I looked at ur comp's specs and noticed ur gpu. I have a 3850 agp that is running core at 720! I think you can further overclock ur 4850 to probably about 750 or 760 core.

Re: Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 Question

is there a mobo out there that would allow me to utilize the three 4870's with the x16 slots?

I used to flash the bios on my 4850 and overclock it but when I installed windows7 it wouldn't recognize my card unless I had the stock bios, so I switched it back and haven't messed with it much since, I haven't been gaming that much lately either and even when I did I wasn't seeing very big differences in FPS from the gpu overclocks compared to cpu overclocks so I just set it at stock and bumped the memory clock up and concentrated on getting my Q6600 to 3.0ghz...

gpu clocks would only really matter with comparable gpus anyway, the differences in our two cards make the gpu clock difference pretty much irrelevant, I've actually been looking for a good AGP card like a 3850 or 3870 for an older system I have with AGP and PCI-E because the PCI-E only runs at x4...
