Problem with replacing folder picture (OS X)

I had to reinstall my operating system the other day and since then when I have tried to drag pictures to change my folder picture into other picture (for ex. into my school logo) it simply changes into the preview icon with the JPEG across the bottom. Anyone know what is wrong?

P.S. I also haven't been able to look at certain documents since reinstalling my OS. Could this also be linked to a similar problem?

What type of documents are you trying to open, and could you explain your problem further by posting a screenshot?

So I drag a picture up to the top left of the file info (in this case University of Utah) and and the picture is what happens.

You can't link a file directly from your computer. Use a free image host.

What are you using as an extension? Expand "Name & Extension" and paste what you get.

It just says "University of Utah".

Try adding an extension to that. Use either .JPEG or .JPG.

Only explanation I could think of. You're not the only one with this problem. Some images don't show up as icons for me as well.
