I don't know what's wrong with my brother and computers, but ever since day 1 with his first computer he's had problems with anything computer related. He got rid of his first and traded it for a slightly better used one from me. It was seriously working fine when he got it and it never worked with him. So we replace pretty much the entire system (new and used parts) over a period of time and it does the exact same thing as if we hadn't bought anything new for it at all. I tell him to save money and spend on a brand new one...nope...

So he gets a decent deal on a working used mobo, cpu, and optical drives. throws it in a new case and uses the same PSU, HDD, graphics, and RAM. Works for awhile and then shows up with the exact same stupid problem. So he lives with it for awhile.

What it was doing was it would decide to shut down programs randomly, crashes Firefox all the time, completely shutoff and restart the computer randomly, and just not work with some programs period. I don't know how many hours I've put into the stupid thing and it still works as if it hasn't had anything done to it. Windows reinstalled probably 10 times by now. Now it has recently decided not to boot up all the way. It will get to the Windows loading screen, then restart or shut off power. No BSOD I see.

I'm done with this piece of junk. What can cause this? I've never had any problems like this in any other computer I've worked on (I've owned and worked on several hundred systems). And the computer I have as a spare in my computer room he's taken over now and everytime he turns it on, the network crashes and I have to reset the router and modem...it worked fine everytime before. Maybe I should just throw my brother out the window, problem solved?

I told him to save money again, but he wants airsoft stuff too and he doesn't have a job yet, so... He'll get the money by 2012 or so maybe... He has no money to his name right now. He's selling stuff to get money...for airsoft, lol. And I forgot to say, the first mobo, cpu, and HDD he had replaced are all running together fine in my home server.

Maybe your brother is emitting some form of EMP which causes pc parts in the immediate vicinity to fail.

Seriously, i can't think of any reason for this, bad luck i suppose. Or, environmental situation in your brother's room.

I was thinking along that route but i take a secure internet connection for granted i suppose. It's possible he just likes to download viruses. My sister is the very same.

your brother seems to be doing something every time to make this happen.
Take his computer, and use it like you regularly use yours, and see if you get the same problems.
Or monitor his activities, to make sure he isnt doing something like installing a virus.

Say
"Oi, stop downloading porn, watch it on youporn/redtube like everybody else"

I would think it to be a virus, but as I said, the OS has been reinstalled too many times. He can get the problem almost right away when XP is installed. I never was able to install AVG on it because it would have an error all the time... He could have gotten a virus for the most recent problem, but it's not a virus for the reoccurring problem...

I think I'm going to take it and not even let him near it for like 2 weeks and see if I can use it normally. If this works, then he's not touching anything of my computer stuff anymore...lol.

I heard about EMP before and thought of it again, so I just looked it up:

He's not at home right now and hasn't been in a couple hours, so maybe his computer will be normal. Going to try it out real quick.

All he does that I know if is COD 5 and message boards for his clan(s) on COD 5, or whatever, and then Youtube... He would use Photoshop, but it won't install on his system...lol.

Just FYI, he doesn't d/l porn or anything from Limewire. I checked his history to see where he had been and it wasn't anywhere that seems like a virus would be. As said, I don't think this is a virus...

I have the system in my room now. I got it too boot fully once. Now it refuses to boot again. I reset the BIOS the one time I was able to get the CMOS up... Now it gets past the post screen, says there's no boot disk, and shuts off power... But my brother has my extra system in his room now, so we'll see if that one gets screwed up as well...
