Cabbs summed that up pretty much perfectly. I'd go with LED's, there more focused, have a lower power consumption and are more reliable. As far as colours go, don't go blue and red, makes me barf. I'd say, blue and white or blue and blue. The only reason i'm not suggesting blue and green is because i am a Rangers fan.

I used to have one that was like a Plasma ball, but it was in a tubular form.. It was AWSOME! Now, you couldn't get that from an LED!

That's true, for cool special effects cathode technologies have the advantage.
