help with commodore 64 emulator

Hello,

I just downloaded an ancient commodore 64 game: Gateway to Apshai. It's a .com file.

I also downloaded a C64 emulator called CCS64 V3.6.

The problem is that when I try to load the game, it tells me it can't find it.

I type LOAD "GATEWAY TO APSHAI.COM",8,1

I also tried LOAD "GATEWAY TO APSHAI",8,1

but I just get "FILE NOT FOUND ERROR".

The emulator is at C:\CCS64 V3.6 Install\disk1. The game is copied at all three levels of the directory hierarchy (at C:, at C:\CCS64 V3.6 Install, and at C:\CCS64 V3.6 Install\disk1).

I'm told I have to mount the harddrive for the emulator but I don't know how to do that. Can someone help me?

I've also got the game as a .d64 file, which I don't know how to run. I've also got DOSbox but it doesn't seem to run properly in that. I'm willing to take other suggestions (like search for other file types or other emulators), but for now I'd just like to know how to get the emulator to recognize my harddrive and the file on it.

Thanks.

DOSBox would have been one to suggest if the game saw dos files. The problem getting the 8bit games running is not seeing an exe file in one of the directories.

With DosBox you first type "mount C: C:\game directory" and press enter to see "C has been mounted". The screens here will show how that looks.

Once the drive\game folder are mounted on a virtual dos drive there you then have to change from Z or whatever DosBox comes up with to C.

When seeing the C:> prompt once that is done you simply type in the name of the game's executable file and suddenly...

that old 8bit game or app is running. The alternative if you are not able to get any emulator to work would be simply playing the freeware versions available online like those seen at http://www.the-commodore-zone.com/articlelive/articles/35/1/JaC64---The-Java-C64-Emulator/Page1.html

There's also different emulators to try out for the C64 games. http://www.computerbrains.com/ccs64/

Thanks Dodge, but DOSBox just won't run it. I tried renaming it to an .exe file and it just froze DOSBox. I can't find an .exe version online.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the emulator itself, so I don't think downloading another one will help. I've been told there's something you have to do to get C64 emulators to recognize your harddrive and find files on it. Are you sure you can't advise me on that?

Also, I'm not seeing Gateway to Apshai on that online freeware website (great site btw). What would I type in the emulator? LOAD "GATEWAY TO APSHAI.COM",8,1 right?

The first thing to look at there would be the OS used. DOSBox works with old MS Dos games and apps. The old Commodore games may have used DR Dos or a UNIX form of some type. I think that's where you are getting stuck.

OS: ROM BASIC !!! http://oldcomputers.net/c64.html ut ooooooo..... pre dos days there alright!

The other thought that the reason the emulators are not working would be that some of the old files are missing or you are not entering the correct commands to see those mount the virtual drive and load the games.

One place that seems to have a quite a bit rolled up into catagories to look over for game instructions, emulators, and other old archives is seen at http://www.worldofspectrum.org/WoSFAQ.html

I think you will end up in a place like that in order to find what you need there. The closest I've worked with here for anything prior to an I286 seeing any games was something as old as the C64 namely an Epson HX-20 used by the sale dept. in those days.

Those saw some 512kb over the Commodore's 64kb then. A good page on that ancient history is seen at http://www.artscipub.com/history/hx20/
