Is it possible for someone to retrieve Messenger logs of another person, without that person's password? An acquaintance has been told that his bosses have logs for the last 6 months and he is to be dismissed because of personal use

If the acquaintance was on office computers then it's hugely possible that the msn logs have gone to a common drive which can be accessed by the systems admin and passed on to there boss. That's perfectly possible.

In fact, as far as privacy it's likely that the employee even signed a waiver to allow the boss to do this when the employee took the job. An agreement, or contract clause which mean that however tastefully the use of the pc's can be monitored by them without risk of privacy breaches.

as tom-knox said, yes it is possible. If the employee's work is being saved to a central server and assuming his boss has admin rights (which im sure he does) these logs can be accessed.

Yes it's possible for them to have the logs from while they used msn at work, in one of two ways. Their's software that they can run on a server / router which will log all msn conversations, as well as if the person is dumb enough to save logs, they could likely look at the logs.

Looking at msn conversations legally equates to wiretapping in the US, and the employer could likely be jailed if they look at the logs.

even if the logs are saved on the actual computer, then theres no reason why an admin cant just logon and get them, or that method is possible too ^
either way, people need to be careful when doing things at school, work, etc. not only may someone be reading, but you can also get into a lot of trouble. save it for home :)
