If I go and buy a reatail copy of the game, will I be able to play online with my mate who has got the game by downloading it though steam? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't want to waste my money. Thanks.

Yeah you will be able to as long as he downloaded it through steam... if he bootlegged it then no without finding no steam servers

If his downloading through Steam and has the legal version with the key. Then yes of course he will.

But if you download it off mininova or some p2p or torrent site. Then probably no, unless you can get an online fix.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, he did download it through steam and it is a genuine copy, I was just unsure if the retail copy was different to the steam copy in any way.
