Just wondering if it's worth it to get a 4870 x2 at this res on a 24'' monitor. Should I just save money and get the 4870 1gb card now and if needed in the future get a second 1gb card or just get the 4870 x2 2gb card now?

If you have the money for the 4870x2, you might as well get the GTX 295. It performs a significant amount better than the 4870x2, for around the same price.

Thanks for the reply

The cheapest 295 I found was $469 after MIR, there is a 4870 x2 for $399 after MIR, is the $70 worth the difference? Also am I going to get enough use out of these at 1920x1200 to justify getting them or is the 1gb 4870 just as good?

I think you'll be good with a HD 4870 1GB card. Do a Google for it and read the reviews. It seems to perform well at that resolution.

it depends on what your doing... for rendering purposes like visual effects work in node based systems such as Houdini 9.5, Shake 4, and Nuke 5.1... the 2gb of gddr5 ram allows me to shit all over my buddy who is running a comparable system but with a 295 in render times... usually by about 5-7 min, which turns out to be about 200-300% faster... as for gaming... im not sure because i dont really play anymore... but ive read a bunch of reviews about how from 1920 x 1080 and above the 4870X2 actually has been beating the 295 across the board for the same reason... but as i said i dont really play that much anymore so i cant actually speak from experience on that... ive been using this Asus AEH4870X2 for about a month now and i think i am an official self proclaimed Fanboy... so im just sayin dnt believe all the hype your going to here on here about how glorious the 295 much the 4870X2 sucks... i dnt know where all the hates comin from but shes a beast! haha

^^ 1+ ^^

The HD4870X2 is a killer card and as said above can beat the GTX295.

Although I think it might be over kill for a 24" monitor as the 4870X2 starts to shine at resolutions of 2,560x1,600. You really need a 30" monitor to make good use of a HD 4870X2.

Consider maybe the HD 4870 512MB.

I think this is a slightly biased opinion.

I think the HD4870 X2 can match the GTX295.

I'll give an unbiased opinion on HD 4870 X2 vs GTX 295. :D

Depends entirely on the game, some games the GTX 295 wins, sometimes the X2 wins, sometimes they draw. Although the 295 probably does have the X2 best for the most part, and that's why it costs more.

Anyways, back to the original topic. I agree with AR, a HD 4870 1GB is enough for 1920x1200. I'm using a HD 4850 512MB at 1920x1600 and I have no problems. The increase in cost from the 4870 to the X2 just isn't worth it for 1920x1200 IMO.

Here's a review of the HD 4870 1GB if you want to see how it performs.
