i need help brainstorming this problem

my guess is that he is trying to take the old hdd and boot up that copy of XP on the new system, unless that new ASUS board and the older HP board have almost identical chipsets it won't boot up...

reinstall XP on the old hdd if there is space, just don't repartition and reformat the drive (it'll tell you it's moving the old XP into a "windows.old" folder) and all his old files will still be safe once he starts using the new XP install, he'll just have to go out there and find them in their appropriate folders...

My thoughts exactly.

Reinstall and reformat, put the HDD back in the old system if you need to get any files off it.

thanks ill reinstall windows see if that works, if not ill reformat and if that doesn't work ill keep you all updated =p.

thanks for all your input though.
