I have a HP Pavilion a1540n

It has a Asus mother board: ASUS A8M2N-LA
and The processor is: Socket: AM2
AMD , Athlon 64 X2,
* Four 240-pin DDR2 DIMM sockets
* Supports PC 4200 (533 MHz) and PC2 5300 (667 MHz) DDR2 DIMMs
* non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
* Maximum HP/Compaq approved memory is 4 GB*

Now the question: What ram could I use? I haven't bought ram in ages, and I was wondering what would be the best?

It has 2GB in now, I was going to put 2Gb to give me 4

Get some that matches the memory already in your rig. If it's PC 4200, you may want to grab 4GB of PC 5300 for a boost in performance.

A good deal would be Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) - $41.99 w/free shipping.

Make sure you do what AR suggested. Don't just get 2GB of faster RAM to add to your pre-existing RAM because you would be shortchanging yourself. For instance, if you have PC4200 right now and add another 2GB of PC5300, all of the RAM (even the faster PC25300) will run at the slower PC4200 speeds. So, as AR suggested, get yourself 4GB of PC5300 (or whatever the max is that you can run) and go with that!

EDIT: P.S. I'm sorry if that was confusing. If your the RAM you have in now is the maximum speed it can be, then you can add another 2GB of the same speed. If the RAM you have in now isn't the maximum speed it can be, then you'd want to do the above--replace all 4GBs.
