How do i tell what ide controllers are being use and what aren't and i have an uknown device and sm bus controll that have a question mark with a exclamation mark

Sounds like you need to install the motherboard chipset drivers. The SMbus is used for low-speed system management communications and it's drivers are installed in the driver package for your motherboard.

what about the uknown device

my mobo is asus m3a

Those sometimes turn out to be a LAN or RAID controllers that are cleared up with the chipset driver install.

Have you installed all the drivers from the install CD? Sound, LAN, etc.
