Video converters

Looking for a good converter to convert especially flv files to mpeg or avi.
I have downloaded most recommended downloads from download.com but they mostly either need to be bought to function correctly or they drain the PC of memory. Actually after two successful conversions, i was told that the required codec to play the file is unavailable!

Anyone have a free converter that has never let them down?

well when i sub anime ,i think megui is the best. it converts all media files....
