It's fast, but nothing even comes close to maxing out USB 2.0 right? Harddrives could start moving to this instead, but still, do we really need it?... Possibly for external graphics cards for laptops?

Hard drives easily max out USB 2.0. USB is Measured in Mb, not MB. Current hard drives get about a third of there potential speed on USB 2.0.

The PCI bus only supports 128 kilobauds per gigaframe, so I doubt that usb 3.0 would be compatible.
