Laptop Battery Error

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop 1.6ghz dual core Amd processor 2gb ramrunning Windows Vista and when I start up the laptop it comes up with a battery warning saying it is not able to recognise the battery and the system wont be able to charge. I have not touched the battery since I got the laptop last year. I went on the Dell website and tried to download the bios upgrade but the computer wont let me install it even tho I have administrator rights any ideas?

What error do you get when you try to flash the BIOS? I think this is a windows problem, but to be sure, do you have a Knoppix or Ubuntu disc lying around that you could boot up and see if it charges in that?
