PC won't recognize headphones

Just broke a pin in a cable for my subwoofer so my speakers don't work any more. I do have headphones, but I can't get the computer to recognize them. They make a sound when they are plugged in, but no audio. In the sounds and devices section, it also doesn't show anything. I am not sure if the pc does recognize headphones in this area though. Any thoughts?

I don't know, how do I find this out? I wasn't able to find it in control panel/system/hardware but I may have overlooked it.

Well if you go to you're start menu and click on 'run',type in 'dxdiag' and after it has loaded click on the audio tab.It will have it in there.

...Uh it says no sound card found, but...I mean I'm pretty sure I have a sound card. Whatever came in the PC anyhow, it is an old Sony Viao.

After I accept the agreement to download, it brings me to a directory with nothing in it.
