Hey guys I'm new here and I was wondering if I could get some advice because I want to get a new graphics card: nvidia geforce 9600gt.
At the moment I have an 8400gs this is a pci-ex16 card & ddr2. My motherboard is an Asustek berkeley. Not SLI ready. I hope thats enough specs just tell me if it isn't. ;) (my OS is vista 32-bit) I was wondering if it would be feesable or stupid to buy this graphics card seen as it is an SLI ready card, ddr3 & pci-e 2.0 x16. Is there any way that it'll run or am I on a wild goose chase here?

Thanks in advance.

First of all, welcome. What type of games do you play and what is your budget. What case do you have?

Also what CPU do you have?

hey thanks for the welcome ;) I'm an RPG fan aswell as guild wars and the casual FPS (counterstrike). I recently bought mass effect and i've gotten totally submerged into rpgs in general. I'm thinking of getting fallout 3 and dead space but I want to upgrade my gpu to get the best gameplay. My cpu is a quadcore 2.5ghz. My moniter's resolution is 1280 x 1024 (32-bit). I also just found out that my power supply is a 300W.I don't kow what my case is but I know I don't have space for ore than a single slot GPU. I live in Belgium so my budget is ~100€ which is $120-130. and I'm into metal LambofGod.../,,/ /,,/

Nice brother :)

for $120 - 130 you cant get much better than an 8800GT/9800GT I have owned a few of these and they are VERY good cards, you would be happy with it.

but 4850 is only $20 above your price range and after rebate falls in @ $130.00 :) and the 4850 Is the peoples champion, its a badass card for the money

For that price, you could get a Nvidia 9800GT. Just falling short of the maximum amount:

There is also the ATI 4830 which again just falls short of your maximum:

I'm really not sure how powerful those cards are, but thats how far you can probably get, at the price point you mentioned.

EDIT:

LambOfGod beat me, but yeah, if you can afford $20 more, the 4850 will smoke most games you try. I didn't even hear of the 4830 before I just checked...
I believe the cards are single slot though which is a good thing for you :)

I do have to mention though, that your power supply of only 300 watts could be an issue, and it'd probably be worth seeing the recommended wattage for each card...

EDIT 2:

It looks like the minimum PSU wattage for the 9800GT, and probably any other cards of that power is 450W. The 9800GT can drag 225 watts from your PSU at full load, so all in all, I think an upgrade of your PSU is neccessary first :(
Or, you'll have to get a much less powerful card, which won't even risk getting close to the maximum or minimum amount you specified for the upgrade :p

I agree...

The requirement listed by NVIDIA for the 8800GT is 26A of +12V current. To adequately power the card, and at the same time adequately power the rest of your system.

here is a PSU calcualtor

But on the otherhand some people are doing alright using smaller PSU's

I guess it makes it worse though that the 300 watt power supply he has, probably came with the case/system, so it won't be of very good quality either
