backing up your rig

I was wondering if those of you who back up your PC's to an external HD if you disconnect it after it is backed up or do you just leave it connected?

Currently, My pc is backed up to an external USB HD.

disconnect it as it can cause system to run a tad slower.

I used to use an external as my main file storage up until recently but yes I would say disconnect since leaving it on is just one more thing for the computer to manage that you aren't using.
