Need help using an adsl wifi routor with a cable modem

my girlfriend has a cable modem but she would like wifi. the modem is a webstar like this one:

and the routor is a belkin f5d7632-4

i would like to know of any way to run the internet through an ethernet cable from the modem into the ethernet ports on the belkin and have the routor send it out by wifi?

Basically, what you do is, and I quote (Albeit i change it a little):

plug an ...Ethernet cable from the modem into an Ethernet port on the Belkin and have the router send it out by Wi-Fi

thats what i thought but when i tried it and it doesnt work. plugged it into the number one ethernet socket and no internet so i was wondering if there were any settings on the routor that i needed to change first

you plugged it into the "LAN 1" port? THat's probably your issue. It should go into WAN or Internet depending on what you router calls it.
