i have a 40 gig hard drive that im trying to replace with a 160 gig, i have an older computer and both these hard drives use EIDE cables to connect to the motherboard

so i unplug the current harddrive and use the same cables n everything and plug the 160 gig hd in and start up my pc

gets past the windows page but then goes to a black screen and just sits there with the constant blinking of an _

can anybody help me with this process

if its a Brand New HDD, you would need to install an OS.

its not its an old one from another computer
also the computer i got it from was crashed and had a system32 error

majority of a time, changing a motherboard would have to reformat Windows on the HDD.
Now you might say you didnt change the Motherboard, but you actually did if you think about it.

If the 160GB drive has XP installed on it, you could pop in the XP install CD and try to do a repair install as shown here: XP Repair Install.

yes the drive does have windows xp installed on it thats why i thought it was going to work when i plugged it into my computer... but yes it should have xp but its from a crashed pc that had a system32 error
