I have a 120 GB Western Digital that is the 2.5" mobile type. Its SATA too. Could I get it to fit in a desktop or is that a generally bad idea?

Well, It wont be as quick as a full sized one, though. They typically run at 5400RPM instead of the 7200RPM of a full sized desktop Hard drive.

I would probably only be using it until I can get a normal one. Could I just put it in or is there some kind of adapter I would need to make it fit in the 3.5" bay?

its gonna work, i did it. I used my external 2.5" HDD in my desktop as a backup and it works.

you could get one of those drive bays, i think they cost about $6?
I just put my HDD on the bottom of the case, and it worked fine.
