Using Gmail to access my email from work

Hi everyone,
I am using Gmail to access my work email. But it seems like gmail is not like outlook that it takes the mesg out of the email server once I open it in outlook then the message is on my PC and I know in Outlook there is a way to set it up so you can leave a copy on the email server. Now Is gmail has something like that that I need to turn off so it will not leave a copy on the email server. my box is getting full.
