This one guy on Bimmerforums had to pick up a clean E36 M3 Euro spec in Europe and guess where he had to drive through to get there...

I would shit a brick if I had to drive a FWD car down Stelvio Pass. You understeer over those stone railguards and you'll fall down the side for weeks.
 
Probably converted it to RWD. The chassis itself is nice and compact, it's just the drivetrain that doesn't work in racing. No sensible racing team would use FWD for motorsports. You just can't maximize the car's performance with it.
