yeah, as the title suggests should i get SLI with 2 8800gt's or one 9800gtx. the rig would be for playing games such as COD4 and crysis

i would go with one 9800GTX, i dont think multi GPU are 100% working yet, so single GPU works better, and later on if you got some more money, maybe pick up another 9800GTX to SLI that.

I think SLI is pretty cool. I'd love the look of 2 GPUs in my motherboard. Unfortunately, SLI'ing is not very effective like Teny stated. I believe it's sucking only 40% of the second card's performance right now. Xfire'ing sucks a little more, but not effective enough that it helps to have SLI over a single card.

the cheapest 8800GT is $111, and the cheapest 9800GTX+ is about $200.
so the 8800GT is slightly more.
I would still go for the 9800GTX, it looks nicer than the 8800GT, to me at least. I like them dual slots for some reason, and there isnt really any games out there that requires more than an 9800GTX at the moment, since i am able to run most games with an 8800GT.
But if he goes with the 9800GTX+, then later he can get another 9800GTX+ when it becomes cheaper and it will be faster than the 8800GT SLI.

No offense, but does looks really matter? I mean, you'll only see it every once in a while.

i have an transparent side panel, and once in awhile when i am boared, i like to look through the panel and admire my hardware. :D
its like so hypnotizing.
once when i dont have an transparent side panel, i opened up my case to show him the motherboard he might be getting, and just when i was about to close it, he was like "NO! i want to stare at it some more".

The name makes it sound a lot faster than the 8800GT, but in reality, performance difference between the 8800GT and the 9800GTX is only about 10%, so two 8800GT's would obviously outperform a single 9800GTX in 95% of cases.

And if you really don't like the look if it, put a new cooler on it. The new Thermalright T-Rad2 performs better than their HR0-3+.
