Temperature concerns :/

Hi all, bit worried here. Looking at my monitoring programs, I've come to discover that I have some parts getting rather warm already and I was wondering if someone could give any advice. I don't quite know what Temp3 is in SpeedFan/Hmonitor, but I've seen it as high as 84 degrees celcius. Similarly, my GPU was at 78 degrees last night, though it's not risen quite that high yet (I've disconnected the extra 12v the motherboard was getting from the PSU for graphics cards).

Now, I wouldn't be concerned about the GPU if it was under load, but all I'm doing is running Windows (Vista) and my web browser. Temp3, on the other hand, is a major concern because:

A) I don't know what it is
B) Since taking those screenshots, it has risen to 81 (my GPU is now at 68)

If anyone could shed some light on the situation, I'd be most grateful.

CPU is a Phenom 9950 and GPU is a HD 4870.

First of all, for the video card check the under load temperatures. Around 70c does sound quite high for idle temperature but if it doesn't go too high (and you get no artifacts) then everything should be fine.

As for temp3, no idea. You can check your mobo and cpu temps from bios. It it's one of those... then.. RUN LIKE HELL! Well, maybe no need to run but then there is definitely something wrong and I would not advise you to do anything with the pc untill it's fixed.

Yea, that has me stumped as well. I have no idea what Temp3 is.

As for your video card, the HD 4870's do run hot as many have reported.

The Temp3 temperature doesn't appear anywhere in the BIOS. Some people on other forums say it's an unused sensor, so I've emailed Gigabyte to clear it up.

As for the 4870, I've solved the problem. Found a fix on the 'net whereby you edit the fanspeed value in an XML file. I've upped it from 20% to 40% and it now idles at around 40-43 degrees.

Edit: Here's the link to the method used. 65% sounded really loud on my system, though, and didn't offer a significant advantage over the quieter 40% setting.

On my other computer- it allways had a sensor reporting -43 degrees celcius. The bios had no reference at all to it- but it was in speedfan
