Motherboard upgrade

I was wondering if these motherboards are compatible with my very old desktop (Dell Dimension 2300). Instead of tossing this one away, I'd like to know all the upgrade possibilities. Buying a new system is not an option for me, being that I recently purchased a brand new notebook.

These are the 2 motherboards I'm looking into:

1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138079

2) http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3921305&CatId=1139

I won't be the one installing these motherboards, an experienced person will.

Will these motherboards be compatible with the dell dimension 2300?

Thanks in advance.

the first thing that sticks out in my mind is that you'll need new memory, I think your old motherboard ran SDRAM (168 pin) and the motherboards you selected will need DDR2 SDRAM (240 pin), that shouldn't be a huge problem though, DDR2 is cheap enough these days...

Thats one of the reasons why I'd like to upgrade. I'm willing to buy as much memory as I can. :)

Someone told me I'm better off getting a "motherboard with socket LGA775 and getting a new CPU, like a Pentium dual core or a core 2 duo."

Is this possible?

yes, and it's also very good advice, it will give you an upgrade path in the future as well, hell, you could build a whole new computer for around $500...

Looking at new motherboards, I came across this one :

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3940037&CatId=1533

Would this be able to install on my system?

As for processor, I came across:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3574211&Sku=CP1-DUO-E8400

I don't want to get all excited about these upgrades only to find out I can't use them .:(

Are these possible upgrades for a dell dimension 2300?

I'm open for any suggestions.

That motherboard and that CPU are compatible with each other.

In addition to that you're going to need DDR2 memory. Also, I don't know if these new parts are going to work well with your current power supply, as this motherboard requires a 24-pin connection, and most older power supplies had just 20 pin.

Theres also an issue regarding a graphics card.. AGP cards don't work with this motherboard, assuming you're not using onboard or something.

There really isn't much upgrading you can do to this computer with the parts your looking at.
