Directing e-mail

I have about a folder for each kind of e-mail I get. Family, school, advertisements, etc. Is there a way I can direct incoming e-mail directly to that folder? Instead of moving it after I've read it...

I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird.

Not that I have come across, I have wanted to do that with Thunderbird as well, and cant work out how to.

What mail provider? gmail provides all those options

I coulda sworn thunderbird had mail filters too.

I get e-mail from the internet providers here: Cox Communications
