U.S. border agents given power to sieze travellers' laptops...

It's not so much that they're looking through it, it's that they'll be taking it away and returning later. Wtf...This is the most shittiest idea out there. The same way you can encrypt information so can terrorists. The same way you can ship stuff so can terrorists. So this is really a failed idea.
Don't our rights as US citizens prevent search without warrant or probable cause?

I can see them doing this to a non-citizen as our constitutional rights do not apply to them, but to citizens too... That's bull.
They're not going to randomly take away your laptop...only if there is "probable cause"

Not according to the article,

They're saying they can rifle through all the information in a traveller's laptop without having a smidgen of evidence that the traveller is breaking the law

If they have no evidence, then they have no probable cause.

Okay, they can search your stuff. They've always have the ability to do that. That doesn't mean if they see a laptop on a random person then they're going to take it away.

The people who make these laws aren't stupid. They thought about these things when they passed it.

just gonna inconvinience yourself there cos they will send it off to somehwere to get it unencrypted and if it cant be then i dunno you prolly wont be getting it back

I'd recommend reading up more about encryption, as I mentioned there are many many types of publicly available encryption that are unbreakable by today's standards, with the most common being AES-256, which I also must mention is approved for US government for protection of the highest security level (top secret), among being used by a great deal of other country's.

If the US government trusts a certain type of encryption for their top secret data, you can be assured that it's virtually unbreakable by today's standards.

I'm just discussing what happens if a person had an encrypted laptop, many businesses are starting to use hard drive encryption techniques to properly secure their data (and it's about time). If a person chooses to not decrypt a properly encrypted computer, they are screwed in their search. I wouldn't let just any random noob at a boarder search my laptop, that's for sure.

you don't have a choice.

you're stuck with whatever the random person is, and personally, I think that if when the border guard asks for your laptop and ou say, no way noob, get someone else down here... well you'll only be making it wore for yourself.

...they're not going to randomly search people. This is a security measure for your own safety. Relax. They don't care about your porno stash, and they're not gonna steal your credit card numbers:rolleyes:

And going with what Chris said, if you really have stuff that's that important, you should have it encrypted heavily anyway.

Your missing the point. They have the right to completely invade your stuff. I don't have a problem with them going through my luggage. In fact the last time I was in Cancun I was pulled aside and they did a luggage search. There is absolutely no reason they should be allowed to access your cell/laptop etc. That's complete bull shit. They can tell its not a god damn bomb by looking at it.

Its the equivalent to going into a home without a warrant. Its not right in anyway. IMO its like a sobriety check point. Ever look at the results from those. Generally a hand full of Dui's then numerous tickets and citations given out. Its all a big scam with a nice coating to let it pass. Yes were checking people for Dui's. Why do they need to see my license and insurance card? O yes thats right to see if I have any warrants and if my shits legit right. But wait wasn't the point of this to see if I'm driving drunk?

This country is full of a bunch of pussy's anymore. And the end result is a load of bs that we have to put up with. Are world stood still when terrorists hit the twin towers yet its day to day life for them. Now were blowing the shit out of there whole country. For the most part there just people trying to live like you and I. There are always going to be bad eggs yet everyone suffers because of them.

Who honestly feels threatened to see any justification for laws like this. Its dumb ass laws like this that keep me from even going to Canada anymore. I shouldn't need to go through crap like this just because I want to go up to there casino for the weekend.

Stuff like this has kept me in this country for the past few years. I don't feel like going to the airport and going through a bunch of bs just to go fly somewhere. I don't feel like having people rummage through my personal belongings.

Were do these laws end. Next you'll see state to state border patrol. You'll need a special permit to leave your home state. Then they'll have checkpoints setup to prob you from head to toe to make sure your not some type of threat.

i dint say they would be able to decrypt it but they will try then if they can they prolly wont give it back
well if they cant decrypt it then they probably wont give it back to you
and you dont have a choice in that matter if they say they want to earch your laptop then they are backed by the law in doing that an unfortunatley even though it sounds like a bit of a stupid law they will search your laptop
and by the fact that you resisted them they are going to have reason to believe you have something on there that you dont want them to see so your probably not going to do yourself any favors there

Yeah... traveling, especially cross-border traveling is becoming more of a pain than a "vacation".
