Okay so, shopping at newegg I have a decent parts list picked out, however its about $350 over my budget. My goal is to make a top of the line overclockable gaming computer, I'm in need of a monitor also. My target price is around $1500. My budget is flexible and could handle the extra $350, but I want to make sure I'm not getting anything I don't need. Any and all help is appreciated.

I'm trying to shave off some money on the price of this system. I would also like to know if I'm using any useless/bottleneck parts. Any and all knowledgeable help would be useful!

Go for the HD 4870 over the GTX 260. It is faster overall and the motherboard supports Crossfire, not SLI.

Will you be overclocking? No point in spending that much on a motherboard if you're not going to be doing some serious OC'ing.

So 10000RPM drives are no good?

The MB dosnt support SLI? I guess I should have checked the manufacuter website, newegg dosnt say anything about wether it supports crossfire or SLI. I went with nvidia over ati because I read somewhere that if you go intel you should go with nvidia. But yes I was unsure wether to go with the 4870 or not.

Yes I'm planning on overclocking, though I'm new at it. Only attempted it a couple times before, was looking for a board that would take it easy on me.

Oh, any advice on wether to go with 64bit/32bit vista/xp?

it dont matter about the processor going with the gpu.
They are all pretty much going to give the same performance. the only thing about that is if you go with an nvidia chipset like nForce for example, then go with nvidia, but if you got an ati chipset like the 790 for example, then go with ati. Not sure if thats true or not.
I got AMD, with ATI Chipset, but i went with the 8800GT as the gpu.
Go with x64 Vista, x64 XP is not as good due to like certain drivers, and programs, while x64 vista supports those.
To me, the raptors are kind of a waste of money, its kind of like $1 per gb (at least at microcenter)
you dont really get much performance gain in games, the only gain you will get is transferring files faster, and the ability to brag that you have an raptors

Thanks for the help guys. I'm hoping to order the parts before monday.

so get rid of the raptor, because it wont help with anything besides file transferring. And switch to a radeon 4870 (anyone know what the difference between a 256-bit and a 448bit interface)?

Any thoughts on the motherboard? Is there something better out there for me for less money? That is probably what gave me the most trouble.

Anyone who has used a raptor able to give advantages/disadvantages, is there a notable difference?

While on that subject of hard drives anyone familiar with raids? I sorta wanted to set up a raid just to play with something new. If you have two 7200rpm drives in raid0 does file transfer go faster? (have this idea that that half goes to one drive and half goes to the other, so faster transfers, no idea if thats right or not). If I were to use two 10000rpm drives in a raid what would be the differences between that and one 7200rpm drive or one 10000rpm drive (besides the amount of GB).

Just tossing questions out, been curious about raids.

i wouldnt get a case that comes with a PSU, they should always be replaces asap, unless its from a quality manufacturer.
i dont think apevia makes good PSU...
it seems like tigerdirect sells the stuff i want for more than newegg
