okay ive been thinking about taking the HDD out of this (current desktop pc) pos Dell and building a much faster budget build and put my HDD inside
my HDD uses an IDE cable
so i was thinking about using this parts list:
case: ASUS MicroATX Mini Tower Case $49.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811173029
mobo: XFX GeForce 7100 MicroATX Motherboard $69.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811173029
CPU: Intel Pentium D 945 3.4GHz Dual core $99.99
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...pNo=2286742&sku=CP2-PD-945 C&SRCCODE=WEBBP712
Heat Sink: Scythe 120mm $49.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185074
Optical Drive: ASUS Black DVD Burner SATA $29.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135165
GPU: EVGA 8600 GT $69.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130292
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 5.1 $26.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102010
RAM: G. Skill 4GB DDR2 800
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231181

now the case comes with a 300 W PSU
i think
and i will be putting my HDD from my Desktop Dell inside (IDE cable)
and ill throw in some more space, like this:
WD Caviar 250 GB intenal HDD SATA $59.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136161

so since i would basicly be building a pc from scratch
what would have to happen to keep my Windows XP on my HDD and get everything up and running again?

Reasons:
here are my reasons why i would consider doing this
im tired of this pos dell
there is no room to upgrade
and i am ablsolutely sick and tired of seeing the Dell logo
on a failing and very limited system

comments
suggestions
anything
what do you think?
thanks

forget a pentium d and get an E2160 and overclock it to 3.2Ghz - itll mop the floor with the PD you for some reason want to get (you realize the PD is old s**t from like 06... right? itll bottleneck everything ).

"If you already checked Pentium Dual Core prices, you might have found several offers on Pentium 4 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_4 and Pentium D processors at similar price points. The clock speeds of up to 3.8 GHz are especially appealing, but these products are all based on the outdated NetBurst microarchitecture. It was designed to run high clock speeds, but it is clearly less powerful on a clock by clock basis when compared to Core 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2 . In other words: a Core 2 Duo CPU can process more instructions per clock than a Pentium D or Pentium 4. Please have a look at our Interactive CPU Charts, where you will find proof that the Pentium Dual Core E2160 at 1.8 GHz can sometimes even beat a Pentium D 960 at 3.6 GHz. In addition, the Pentium Dual Core (which is basically a slightly stripped down version of the Core2Duo requires less than half the energy, which results in a lower energy bill http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_Policy_Act and fewer cooling requirements" ~ Tomshardware.

...not to mention, its significantly more powerful

i know that game is old, but this benchmark still says SOMETHING about the E2160's overclocking value.

but from the CPU benchmarks (And from other benchmarks you may find on the web with that system playing games like Crysis and COD4), you'll see it always matches even sometimes beats the E6750!! (which is like $200+!! the E6750 is like.. POWER USER HIGH END level, you realize that?) plus its probably worth more then your entire dell system put together.

whoa!
stop the gravy train!
its not supposed to be a game machine
its just supposed to be a budget upgrade from my 04 Dell desktop
and to keep that Hdd with all of my files on it also
this thing is supposed to stay cheap!
its going to do nothing but be a printer server
and a file storage
maybe even be graduated up to a wireless network monitoring station
dunno just yet
but i can tell you one thing right now
that 3.4 GHz PD
will beat the snot out of the 2.8 Ghz P4 on a 475 socket
that and im tired of seeing the Dell disk on the front when it sucks so much
it is having a hard time surfing the web :(
