Some PC issues...hardware or software?

I think I may as well just upgrade the computer. Rather than upgrading to a crap card, I'm going to get something decent. Maybe you guys can point me in the right direction for upgrades. I don't want anything top of the line, but, I would like to be able to upgrade again later if I so choose without having to replace everything.

What I have in mind so far is an 8800GT for the Video Card, and for the CPU...I would prefer to stick with AMD. Could you guys help me pick out a motherboard and a decent CPU? Would be great if you can help me out.

This just gets better and better...now the problem is affecting my normal PC usage; I was watching a video on Windows Media Player and the screen flashed black for a second, then went back to normal. Then, 5 minutes later, it went black; permanently. I had to reboot the PC like 3 times before I could even see the startup screen. Its back to working now, but for how long? Hopefully, I'll be ordering my new parts on Monday, and building by next Friday.
