Buying a new hard drive

My old hard drive just went, it was a maxtor 120bg IDE. I'm looking at getting a sata but I think my motherboard only supports 1.5/gb and those seem to be obsolete/very fuckin expensive. Heres my motherboard http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131569

Will I be able to run a sata 3.0 gb? like this one

Or do I need to go back to IDE?

You are correct, your mobo only supports hdd withs a transfer rate of 1.5gb/s. So, the one that you have listed won't work for you.

You can use that drive. SATA 3Gb/s drives are backwards compatible with 1.5Gb/s systems.

You can use the drive you chose. They have a jumper that limits it's output to 1.5Gb/s so it can be used with older systems.

WD makes a very nice drive. Very reliable.

If you don't mind spending a little more, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250310AS 250GB drive for $57.99 (free shipping) would be another good choice. Lots more space, very reliable and quiet.

Do you mean 3 GB of RAM.
Hard Drives of 100 GB are the norm these days.
3 GB won't install an OS.
