It only auto-merges if the two posts are within 24H of eachother. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That is correct. If you look though those posts are only a matter of minutes apart. Like Thelis said, it's because one of bob's posts is in between them only you guys cannot see it.

Nope, a post of Bob's was soft-deleted. It is still hypothetically there, but you cannot see it.
