Running a Raid

Alright, New Idea man.

I have a 250gb IDE drive. I am going to get two of those WD 250 drives you have up there and run them in a raid and put EVERYTHING on that raid. All the documents and stuff, however, I will put on the ide for storage. Sound good?

Now when I get these drives in I will start a new post if I can't figrue this out :D I'm going to have to put the drives in a raid and then install the OS on them.. can you do that?

I run in RAID 1 using 2 320GB drives.
I'm hoping to add 2 more 500GB drives though, and run 2 RAID 1's but I don't know if thats possible, as I don't want to wipe everything :p

RAID is definietly something to have though in my opinion. It protects you (Except for RAID 0) against problems with drives, short of a complete disaster that takes out both drives.

Are you sure? You do know you are doubling the chance of losing all your data that way?

As for doubling 2 RAID's together, I wasn't sure either, unless theres a way to make a bigger RAID array without losing data, making it RAID 5 or whatever.

RAID 1's pretty fast though to be honest, and I did it for the money aspect. I would have got 4 drives if I could have afforded it, and could get speed+safety.

Haha, that would be funny.. the only way for me to "double my chance" is to doubt myself and the hdds in the first place. I'm betting both of them will last a while.

As for your predicament.. I'm sure it works.. because on a 1 everything is copied to every drive.. there has to be a way..

Well I would've put the documents & stuff on a RAID 1 and everything else on the single IDE drive.

That's not saying that your suggestion is bad, because it isn't.

@Kage

You can have multiple RAID 1 arrays and you wouldn't loose any data doing this.

I have 8 SATA ports and at the moment I have just one RAID 1 array using only 2 SATA ports but I could have four RAID 1 arrays if I really wanted to.

All you have to do when you set up the new array is to select the drives you want in the RAID and select the RAID type you want.

Easy, when you know how...

:D

Been reading up more and I'm coming up on a couple of these. Saying Raid 0 is only for people who move stuff around alot.. Not increasing the performance speed of games and such. I'm not going to spend that much money if it's not going to speed anything up :D

*Just sticking with one sata 7200 rpm drive :p*
