1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

I don't see why it wouldn't be able to. Your Laptop should handle it as well.

Also, if you're going to exclusively use this drive for your desktop, and never move around with it, I don't see why you'd go external- they're slower unless you use an eSATA cable (I'm not sure if you'll reach SATA speeds like this or not, but I know it's faster than USB).

Anyway, I'd just go internal.
 
there shouldn't be any problems. And that drive should show up as about 975GB, so you won't get exactly 1TB but this is a "problem" that happens with all drives.

That's simply because Windows interprets a KB as 1024 K- using binary and HDD are sold using the decimal method, making it look like more. Under that system, as a KB is 1000 K and a MB is 1000 KB, etc. This may not seem like a huge difference, but it adds up. In Windows, the drive will be displayed as about 920GB...975GB is being way too optimistic xD

But where did you get the 920GB?
1000 (=GB's in the drive according to manufacturer) x 1000 (1000MB = 1GB according to the manufacturer) = 1000000.
So a total of 1 million MB's.

1000000 / 1024 (MB's in a real GB) = 976.5625
So ~ 975GB.

So where did you get the 920GB? Or is my maths just screwed up? (this is highly possible, I suck in maths and now that I'm really tired I must suck even more)

I didn't do the math xD- yours is correct.

But for me, with 200GB hard drives I loose about 12GB...so maybe it's partly due to formatting? I dunno, but obviously the decimal system vs. the binary isn't the only factor

theres 1024 Bytes in a kb
theres 1024 Kb in a Mb
theres 1024 Mb in a Gb

so wouldnt it be, 1024 * 1024 * 1024 = 1 073 741 824

bytes in a Gigabyte that windows sees, 1,073,741,824
bytes in a gigabyte as sold to public 1,000,000,000

thats a difference of 73,741,824 or 73 megabytes and 741 kb and 825 bytes.

so lets just say you lose 73.7 megabytes for every gigabyte in your hardrive.

(200 * 73.7) = 14 740. 200,000 -14740 = 185 260 or 185.2 Gb which is close enough lols,

so n e ways on a 1,000 Gb drive you will get.

1,000 * 73.7 = 73,700 so 1,000,000 - 73,700 = 926,000 so you will see about 926 Gb when once installed in your computer.
