good psu

Sorry, it doesn't work that way.
ohh it doesn't? Is that so? Well would you please then be kind enough to explain how it works? :D

All of the PSU's I listed are more than powerful enough for what he is running.

yeah I'm not saying that those won't work. AFAIK the 9600gt requires 24 amps for the +12v and it would probably run without any major problems even if the amps were a little short of 24. I'm just saying that I'd rather have a psu with decent amps instead of one that doesn't.

If you have 4 12v rails w/ 25A on each rail, you still only have a total of 25A available, not 100A.

If you used your theory on the above mentioned example, you would have 1200w available on the 12v rail

I'm sure it's in Jonnyguru's FAQ, let me get to the other box and I'll look it up.

From the above mentioned FAQ:
Ok… Now look at the 12V rails. There's four 12V rails (I'll explain why later) and they are rated at 22A and 22A, 36A and 36A. The maximum combined wattage of those two rails is 65A (780W / 12V = 65A).

What?!? But 22A + 22A + 36A + 36A is 116A? Like the +3.3V and +5V rails I just mentioned, +12V rails are not additive. You can load each one up to 22A or 36A, but you can't load them all up to their max.

ahh.. I get it now. Let me take a look into my case and see what it says about the max for all of the +12v's.
edit: 580w total. So that would mean 580 / 12 = 48.33 amps for the +12v?

No, that PSU provides 216w on the +12v. 18*12. Read the entire FAQ from Jonnyguru, there's a lot of good info there.

BTW - In no means am I saying anything negative about that particular PSU, I just put one in my sisters box.

No, that PSU provides 216w on the +12v. 18*12.

yeah but isn't that for one rail only? 18A (which is the max for 1 rail) x 12v.
The sticker says that the max combined power for the +12v is 580W. So 580W / 12V = 48.33A. Just like in the example:
The maximum combined wattage of those two rails is 65A (780W / 12V = 65A).

no?

wait so the earthwatts430 wil be more than enough to power on and use the upgraded system( the amd opteron one) right because im lost after reading what you guys are saying about the rails...
