Ok Im intrested really in doing a few things but I can't because I need Linux, so, I use windows vista, now my plan is this:

Download Porn manager ...sorry not that I mean download partion magic and split up 10g of my harddrive and put linux on so it will have dual boot.

Ok so how do I do this? like I know how to download Linux (which one?) and can burn to disk so I can do that, is just setting linux up thats all, never done it before.

Could some CF member please guide me threw the setup and earn a pink cookie from me and a rep ?

well the first thing you need to do is choose the right linux distro for you. Either just pick one and use it or download a few different ones and use the live cd's for a while to see which one you like the most.

I'd recommend one of these:
ubuntu, kubuntu (basically this is ubuntu with kde), suse or gentoo.
Gentoo might be a bit too difficult for someone who doesn't know too much about linux, but then again if you want to learn you will. The other 3 are more aimed towards beginners and are pretty easy to use and install.

As for partition magic, no need. The linux installer is capable of editing partitions.

Overall installation is damn easy. At least with (k)ubuntu and suse. You just put the cd in, boot from it and then open the install file from the desktop. Simple instructions etc. It's a lot more simple than installing windows.
And if you need any help or something you can simply ask while installing. (you install from the live cd, while running the live cd, so you have access to the internet when installing etc)

Google is your best friend when it comes to learning how to use it. It's going to take a while since you have never used it before but once you learn (and configure it to your liking) then it's going to be an awesome os.

But thnx alot for that, ill use ubunto because its a free download and like you said, it's aimed at noobs like me, but yes when I get home I'll download it, should tak about 20mins or something and then install.

So bascailly it gives me an option to edit my partion? if i click install it will not install over windows?

I tried installing Linux Mint. On dual boot.

It didn't work and I had to re-install my whole system.

The thing is I really would like to use a Linux OS and be able to choose which OS loads but I just don't know how to do it successfully. So i'll peek into this thread for help...

I've just downloaded ubuntu. It's about 715MB and took me about 5 mins to download. I have a separate HD that I can install this on if need be so it doesn't conflict with my XP PRO install.

Yea I checked my current download speed and I was hitting nearly 19MB/sec. I'm with VirginMedia 20mb. It changes all the time.

The information on that link is sweet. I'm just trying to build up the courage to install ubuntu on the other drive that I have installed...

lol! Thats 1.4 MB/sec bud. VM20MB is the fastest over here that I can get and I wouldn't go to a slower provider for shizzle.
