thats pretty much as good as you can get with the iMac. im going into graphic design at college this fall and the campus is mac based, so it will be used for the software that is in adobe's design premium suite.

should i go with a mac pro and upgrade the graphics card, or will the 256mb ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO be good enough

For that price, I would purchase a Mac Pro.

Usually, Adobe relies more on the processor rather than the GPU.

I agree with 01001010. I would say that you should get a notebook anyway. You say that you are going to graphic design, so you will want to take all your project around with you. Plus, why do u need 4GB of ram? Do you just have money to burn or something?

Actually, let me rephrase that. It's better to max out on RAM from a third party. All manufactures, especially Apple overcharge on RAM upgrades.

for the adobe suite i'd recommend mac pro as well, macbook pros arent too bad, but it just depends on your needs. Graphics is a must dealing with anything creative, generally speaking.

It depends what kind of field you're looking into. For example, Adobe Photoshop doesn't really rely on the GPU as it does the CPU.

I'd opt for the MBPro like most have suggested already. You'll get mobility, power, and a good processor to handle the work. I've had experience with Macbooks, Macbook Pros, and XPS laptops and the MBPros handled everything smoothly.
