explorer.exe missing

on the xp computer i have, under the processes tab of the task manager, there is explorer.exe, but i always disappears and comes back every so 7 seconds. i checkd event viewer, and the error was

the shell stopped unexpectedly and explorer.exe was restarted.
HELP?

the start menu and the desktop icons disappear btw since there part of explorer.exe.

i can live with this, but im trying to sell this computer off and the customer wont buy it if its like this.

I also had this problem, but it was due to installing Visual Studio 2008, and I was forced to reinstall XP. My advice would either be to reinstall or try uninstalling any recent programs you have installed.

Are you running any services that might potentially interact with explorer.exe, such as VNC server or perhaps some shell addons?

nope. i cant find vnc server in services.msc and its not the shell addons

If you're selling the computer, you should have a clean Windows install on there anyway...

yea i had to borrow my friends cd in the end...
